Welcome to the Drakensberg Soaring Club

The Drakensberg Soaring Club is situated eight kilometers outside the beautiful town of Underberg, in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.


Who Are We?

A gliding club situated 8 kms outside Underberg, KZN

The club is situated on the farm Utopia and is known amongst its members as Utopia Base. It boasts two grass strip runways of 14/32 and 05/23 respectively. The runways are regularly mowed to the finish of a good golf course.

Winch launching and occasional aerotow, (when required), is used at the club. There are two two-seat trainers and five instructors.

Come fly with us

We enthusiastically promote our sport and are keen to take visitors for a short Air Experience Flight in one of our two-seater gliders,.
flown by an experienced pilot with the necessary clearances.

An indemnity form is available at the club.
No Air Experience Flights may be undertaken unless this document has been signed and presented to the responsible person at the club.

Our Facilities

The Club house is fully equipped for those wanting to overnight, or even stay a couple of days.  We have full kitchen facilities, with  fridges, deep freezers and a washing machine.  The accommodation facilities include an upstairs dormitory which can accommodate 8 people and 2 separate upstairs rooms which can each accommodate 2 people.

Directions to the Drakensberg Soaring Club Airfield

Coming from Howick on the R617, one passes through Underber, and 4.5 km thereafter, turn right onto the Bushman’s Neck road.

Travel a further 6 kms until  the D1 and Drakensberg Soaring Club sign, where you will turn left and travel a further 2 kms leading to our gate. 

Please ensure that you have made arrangements prior to arriving at the Club, as our facilities are locked when  no one is present.
