Drakensberg Soaring Club
The Drakensberg Soaring Club is situated 8 km from the town of Underberg in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
The club is situated on the farm Utopia and as a result the airfield is known, amongst its members, as Utopia Base.
The club is fortunate to have two grass strip runways, these being 14/32 and 05/23.
Winch launching is used at the club and in general all members must solo on the winch before going solo in a glider. Everyone, including instructors, are expected to take their turn driving the double drum winch and the cable retrieve car.
The clubhouse is fitted out with a stove and a fridge to provide a comfortable base in which to relax after "another hard day gliding". Beds are available in the clubhouse for members and visitors wishing to stay over. Running water is pumped from the dam and the hot shower uses gas for optimum efficiency. A water filter has been installed for drinking water.
